PHILLIPS COLLECTION
Permanent collection with works of exceptional quality and temporary exhibitions of great quality.
Few collectors such as Duncan Phillips (1886-1966) have been able to build such a collection, this one is incomparable. Displayed in what was once his house, built in 1897 (Georgian Revival style) and restored in 2005, the permanent collection includes works of exceptional quality: Matisse, Van Gogh, Rothko, Hopper, Bonnard. Duncan was able to acquire these works thanks to his special relationship with many artists. The temporary exhibitions that are regularly organized are also of high quality. Below are some works from the permanent collection:
On the first floor: Le Déjeuner des canotiers (1880-1881), by Auguste Renoir (acquired in 1923), painted at the Maison Fournaise in Chatou (78) is undoubtedly the jewel in the collection; L'Entrée du jardin public à Arles, by Van Gogh; La Route de Vétheuil, by Monet; Femme tenant un chien, by Bonnard; Dimanche et A l'approche de la ville, by Edward Hopper.
As we walk down the steps: Dufy's Le Studio de l'Artiste; and Braque's Lemon and Napkin Ring.
Downstairs, in the living room and towards the wooden room: Degas' Dance Rehearsal; William Merritt Chase's Hide and Seek; Cézanne's Seated Woman in Blue, La Montagne et Sainte-Victoire; Picasso's Woman with Green Hat; Piet Mondrian's Painting No. 9; Pierre Bonnard's La Terrasse; Matisse's workshop at Quai Saint-Michel; Walter Sickert's Port Saint-Denis; and Vuillard's Femme balayant.
It should be noted that the works are sometimes moved when temporary exhibitions take over the rooms of the house.
