LOVE STATUE - JFK PLAZA
Love statue by sculptor Robert Indiana erected since 1976 on JFK Square, in front of City Hall at the Philadelphia Bicentennial
Robert Indiana's Love statue has since 1976 been the place JFK, also known as Love Park, opposite the City Hall. The sculptor lent her to the city at the ceremony of the bicentennial of Philadelphia, «the city of fraternal love». Letters "L" and "O" are placed above the letters "V" and "E". In 1978, after two years, the statue was moved to New York following a decision by the art gallery managing Indiana works, causing a wave of protests among the inhabitants of Philly. The Philadelphia Inquirer and other local newspapers published articles asking for explanations. The businessman and president of Philadelphia Art Comission F. Eugene Dixon decided to redeem the work and donate it to the city. Philadelphia, and more specifically the JFK Plaza, became his official residence. After more than a year of renovations, the JFK Plaza has been accessible since early 2018. During the work, the Love Statue was sheltered in the nearby park, Dilworth Park, before being finally withdrawn to receive a small coup de jeunes: its coolest layer of paint was up to 1998! She made her great return to JFK Plaza just in time for Valentine's Day 2018.
