RITTENHOUSE SQUARE
One of the 5 urban parks founded under William Penn, now a place to walk, eat and drink, meet joggers
Founded in 1683, Rittenhouse Square is one of 5 urban parks that was founded under William Penn. As early as the 1850 s, while the building sector grew significantly in Philadelphia, this neighborhood became one of the most desirable of the city, so the aristocracy elected to the splendid Victorian residences surrounding it, mostly missing today. In 1913, the Lyonian architect Paul Phillipe Cret redesigned Rittenhouse Square to give him a French-style garden. Today, the park is a living place where you can walk around and enjoy a drink. Evenings and weekends, it is not unusual to cross groups of joggers or peaceful demonstrators equipped with placards.
