CARNEGIE MUSEUM OF ART
Museum with a collection of impressionist and post-impressionist works by American and European painters, contemporary art
The Museum of Art was founded in 1895 by Andrew Carnegie, an industrial and philanthropist also behind Carnegie Mellon University, whose campus is located right next door. Among the museum's 35,000 art objects, visitors can enjoy an impressive collection of impressionist and post-impressionist works of American and European painters (Homer, Pissarro, Monet, Cézanne, Signac…). There are also very rich exhibitions of architecture and contemporary art.
Over the years, the museum experienced significant expansions and some symbolic pieces were not part of the original plans: The Hall of Architecture, which presents almost 150 molded facades and monuments, Hall of Sculpture, where antique works and objects are exposed, and Bruce Galleries, which contain nearly 500 objects dedicated to American and European decorative arts, were added in 1907, while the Sara Mellon Gallery, which extends more than 11,000 m 2, opened in 1974.
