As soon as you know the dates of your stay in Boston, don't wait a minute to book your accommodation. This is especially important during peak season, from April to October. It will help you avoid paying a fortune or finding yourself without a solution.

What's very local

In chain hotels, remember to ask for a non-connecting room. Adjoining rooms separated by two lockable doors on either side are very common in the USA. While this is quite practical when you're traveling with your family, it's not really a pleasant experience when you don't know your neighbors.

If you're satisfied with the cleanliness of your room and the hotel's service, it's customary to leave a few dollars in tips in the envelope provided for this purpose or somewhere in evidence in the room (on the pillow or bedside table). These tips go to the staff who take care of housekeeping.

For food lovers

Most Boston hotels don't offer breakfast. Hostels, on the other hand, usually offer a buffet breakfast included in the room rate, consisting of cereals, fruit juice, toast and jam, pancakes and sometimes a simple hot dish like scrambled eggs.

If you like hearty breakfasts, bed and breakfasts are for you! The hosts are often gourmet cooks who like to pamper their guests with homemade pastries (scones, muffins, bread...), a seasonal fruit salad and a choice of hot dishes that they prepare à la minute.

Smokers

In 2008, Boston became one of the first American cities to implement a smoking ban in all hotel rooms in the city. There are no exceptions to this rule, whether in chain hotels, youth hostels or bed and breakfasts. Smoking is generally prohibited in common areas, too. The same applies to electronic cigarettes.
