OLD SOUTH MEETING HOUSE
The second oldest church in the city, a key site of the American Revolution in Boston
The city's second oldest church, built in 1669 by the Puritans, was the site of some of Boston's most important historical moments. The church was destroyed and then rebuilt in 1729 in the Georgian style (as evidenced by the predominant presence of brick), and nearly disappeared in the Great Fire that ravaged the city in 1872, before being narrowly saved. It was also a key location for the American Revolution: patriots Sam Adams and Josiah Quincy made numerous speeches in support of independence.
