NEWBURY STREET
One of Boston's most prominent neighborhoods, even overshadowing Beacon Hill
The history of this street began in the 19th century, when Boston Harbor was filled in to form what would become Back Bay. The project was completed in 1882, and residential buildings began to be constructed in a very European architectural style. By this time, Newbury Street had become one of Boston's most prominent neighborhoods, even overshadowing Beacon Hill. Over the course of the 20th century, businesses gradually took over the street, transforming it. Today, eight blocks of stores and restaurants line the street.
