COMMON BOSTON
America's oldest public park forms the heart of the city and is dominated by the pretty Massachusetts State House.
The heart of the city is the oldest public park in America, built in 1630. It was here that John Winthrop and other puritans who came ashore from the Mayflower settled. Martin Luther King gave a speech and John Paul II celebrated mass here. The 54th Regiment Memorial by Augustus St. Gaudens, at the corner of Park and Beacon Streets, in memory of the first black regiment that fought in the Civil War, is a must see. It is the starting point of the Black Heritage Trail, which tells the story of Boston's black Americans.
