PEABODY MUSEUM OF ARCHAEOLOGY AND ETHNOLOGY
One of the oldest museums dedicated to ethnography and archaeology in the United States and one of the richest in Cambridge
Affiliated with Harvard University, this museum was founded in 1866 thanks to the generous donation of George Peabody, a patron of the arts who was responsible for the creation of 22 educational institutions in the United States, including the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem. It is one of the oldest museums dedicated to ethnography and archaeology in the United States, but also one of the richest: its collections contain no less than 1.2 million objects and nearly 500,000 photographs! Its region of predilection is America, although research and excavation work has been carried out by the Peabody Museum from Harvard to Egypt, Israel and even France, during the excavations of the prehistoric site of the abri Pataud, in the Dordogne. On the American continent, the museum has participated in excavations in Panama, at the archaeological site of Sitio Conte, in Peru, in the historic city of Chan Chan, and in Guatemala, at the Mayan site of San Bartolo.
On the ground floor, you will find the collection dedicated to the Amerindians, including portraits and paintings representing them; on the third floor (the second floor is not accessible to visitors) are displayed objects related to Latin America, including a superb collection of Mayan monuments; on the fourth floor, objects from all over the world. The exhibitions change regularly. Free guided tours are organized by Harvard students from Friday to Sunday during the school year.
