GREATER LIGHT
Second home and artist's studio, built by sisters Gertrude and Hanna Monaghan on Nantucket.
Sisters Gertrude and Hanna Monaghan, two Quakers from Philadelphia, bought this former cow barn in 1929 and converted it into a second home and artist's studio. Gertrude was a well-known painter and painted murals in department stores in Philadelphia. Her younger sister, Hanna, was an actress and writer. The arrival of these two independent artists and the transformations they underwent in the barn were the subject of disdainful curiosity among the people of Nantucket.
