GINGERBREAD COTTAGES
318 Victorian cottages in a Disney movie setting operated by the Martha's Vineyard Camp Meeting Association in Oak Bluffs.
Here is the surprising jewel of Oak Bluffs, which makes this town look like a Disney movie set. The 318 Victorian gingerbread cottages were built between 1859 and 1880, and their original architecture has been preserved to the present day. By bike or on foot, you can go and admire the bright colours of the wooden walls, balustrades and mantling of these dwellings which form a world apart, surprising and very well preserved. Seeing them lined up in this way, adorned with their pastel colours and delicate details, the houses really look like gingerbread houses (in a giant version of course), in which you would be delighted to take a bite to eat! The site is managed by Martha's Vineyard Camp Meeting Association.
The cottages were built around the Tabernacle, this gigantic kiosk in the middle of Trinity Park. It was here that in the early 19th century, Presbyterians (and a little later, Methodists) used to gather for religious retreats. They would set up tents and stay for several days. It was a time of intense communion with God. In the mid-nineteenth century, this camp was the largest and best known in the country. Today, the Tabernacle hosts various events throughout the summer, the best known being the Great Illumination: every year, in the middle of August, all the cottages are adorned with dozens of lanterns and light them simultaneously at nightfall. A fairy-tale spectacle, which you wouldn't expect to find there!
