WAT OUNALOM
Huge monastery housing a sacred Buddhist relic and a few eyebrow hairs said to have belonged to Buddha.
Completely ransacked by the Khmer Rouge, this immense 15th century monastery has been rebuilt and still looks good, even if the cement cannot make us forget the carved stone. It contains a sacred relic of Buddhism, some eyebrow hairs that would have belonged to Buddha himself. About forty buildings are still visible, once able to accommodate up to 500 monks. Wat Ounalom is considered the heart of Buddhism in Cambodia, and is one of the 5 original monasteries in the capital. The view on the Tonle Sap is superb.
