FRENCH EMBASSY
The French Embassy is housed in a modern, pristine white building in Phnom Penh.
When Phnom Penh was taken in April 1975, hundreds of people came to take refuge there, but the Khmer Rouge demanded that they hand over all the Khmers inside the embassy, under the threat of massacring everyone. The men all had to surrender... This episode is masterfully rendered in the film The Tear and in the book The Gate. A few years ago, France reinstated its former embassy, after renovations. It is a modern building of immaculate white, which sometimes opens its doors to the public for guided tours.
