Built during the 1960s under the direction of the famous Khmer architect Van Molyvann (who was Minister of Urban Planning), this huge stadium has 60,000 seats arranged in tiers, backed by a 12 m high embankment forming a ring. It also includes dozens of sports facilities, an Olympic swimming pool, ponds and a water tower. General de Gaulle gave a speech there on September1, 1966, in front of a huge crowd, warmly congratulating Prince Sihanouk for his undertaking to develop Cambodia.
