Ya Tep is a powerful Neak Ta (guardian spirit of the place) who is supposed to bring luck and protection to the faithful, and would be particularly effective in finding the right lottery numbers.... Offers made of unplucked chicken carcasses regularly decorate the place. Many legends run on this altar. The most beautiful is surely the story of the (too) beautiful courtesan Ye Tep. Chased out of Angkor after a nobleman's wife took umbrage at the carnal interest that Ya Tep had aroused in her husband, she took refuge in the heart of the jungle. By living in communion with the spirits of the forest, it develops magical powers. Powers that bewitch the king of Angkor, while he was hunting not far from there. The king and Ya Tep spent a few nights together and a very great love binds them forever. But one morning, Ya Tep discovered that the king had died in his sleep. Unable to survive her loved one, she killed herself. A legend that reminds us a little of Romeo and Juliet's.
