The town was once a colonial resort for the Cambodian and French elite, but was abandoned during the Khmer Rouge period. Today, Kep has risen from the ashes and offers many charms to discover. Visitors can start their exploration with a stroll through the town center, where they can admire the old abandoned colonial villas and the crab market. Kep's beach, while not the most beautiful in Asia, offers all-day sunshine and shade from the surrounding vegetation. Nature lovers can hire a scooter to explore the surrounding countryside, where they can discover caves, natural pools, rice paddies and villages. A visit to a Kampot pepper farm is also recommended, as is a tasting of Kampot pepper blue crab at the crab market. Kep can be visited all year round, but it's best to avoid the rainy season to avoid the mosquitoes. To get there, you can take a bus from Ha Tien in Vietnam or from Phnom Penh. As for accommodation, there are numerous guesthouses and hotels in the region to suit all budgets.
