Built in 1863 in the purest neoclassical style (now a national monument), it is the largest theater in the city. After a decade of restoration, it has reopened its doors to the delight of locals and tourists alike. At the time when Matanzas rivaled Havana, this theater enjoyed great prestige throughout the island: in 1887, Sarah Bernhardt walked the stage and the dancer Ana Pavlova performed there in 1915. The Milanés (Pinar del Río) and Terry (Cienfuegos) theaters are directly inspired by the architecture of the Sauto.
