This fort was built at the beginning of the 18th century (around 1720) slightly overhanging the bay of Matanzas and intended to protect the mouth of the Canímar River from pirate attacks. Completely restored in 1975, it became a national monument in 1991. The castle also houses a museum dedicated to Antonio Guiteras Holmes, executed in 1935 by Batista's henchmen for his opposition to the regime. Even if you don't visit the castle, a visit there will allow you to enjoy a fantastic panorama on the bay.
