Built in the 19th century on the foundations of a 16th century church (built around 1530), the Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria is the most important religious building in the city. Note the beautiful stained glass windows and the magnificent wooden ceiling. The visit of Pope John Paul II to Cuba, in 1998, was the occasion of a vast restoration work of the whole. The cathedral is named after the city's saint, the Virgin of La Candelaria.
