Built in 1601, the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Merced was originally a small wooden temple. Legend has it that in 1601, a miraculous apparition came from the depths of the water in place of the small temple. Rebuilt in the 18th and 19th centuries, it preserves pieces of Hispanic-American funerary religious art from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, including a silver holy sepulcher from 1762. Its catacombs are the best preserved in Cuba.
