Management:
Please speak with Kellen at reception. There was an additional lock put on my locker. When I asked for it to be removed I had to wait until 1:20pm for the next person on shift.
Kellen wouldn't open my locker and ignored me. The hostel was withholding my passport, and credit card illegally. I was checked out, and leaving. I had no problems with the hostel, or premises, until I was leaving. I had to wait 1.5hrs for the lock to be opened.
An employee with authority abused his power and I felt unsafe, and all I wanted was to leave. Take note in this online review, this isn't good, or wise of staff members to do this to customers. Withholding passports, and credit cards are illegal, and I didn't owe any money.
You have my contact information, if you chose to email and talk about this further I m happy to set up a time with you.
Another women opened the locker for me without hesitation and apologized, so thank you to her for being there.
****UPDATE****
Management has never contacted me about this scenario. If you stay at this location as a single female traveller, be aware of the guy named Kellen (if he is still employed or around the area). I would consider myself a fairly experienced traveler over the years. Rockin J's is the first and ONLY place that has had an employee/staff member put an additional lock on my personal belongings locker. And since I know I had already payed and was LEAVING, I could not leave the premices without my passport or money.
Show this review to Management and let them know how important it is not to have creepy male staff in charge of computers, or access to lockers!
Management should atleast notify the public that this situation was acknowledged. Females being held up in hostels isn't a positive review/good for word of mouth once people start reading this. (I stayed there for 3 days).
The aren't giving you what you paid for. Beware.
I wanted to stay in this hostel and booked a room for me and my friend. The hostel canceled the room and gave me a refund voucher instead of my money back. When I wanted to use the voucher, they said it's only for their tent options which are only 5000 colones and only for one person. They weren't interested in finding a compromise, replying the same text over and over again, ignoring me completely in the end. Super rude.
Overall a very interesting place, but definitely among the sketchier places I've stayed at. Very much a music festival-type of vibe. Most of the people there were very friendly, though some of them were openly smoking crack. The coked-out guy in the bed above me came in one morning with a tale of having been the victim of an attempted robbery at gunpoint hours previously. Certainly a place to be careful about your belongings, as is all of Puerto Viejo, and they do provide large lockers to facilitate this. Nice location on a beautiful beach and rather affordable prices meant this was an ok experience rather than the terrifying disaster it might have become.
Strange but charming place. The initial project must have been something fantastic. You will find all kinds of alternative people, from the fantastic to the less-fantastic.
A unique experience, though.
The hostel itself is what you'd expect for the price you pay, it is still pretty clean considering how many people there are. Some guests do not respect others and make a lot of noise long into the night. I would say that the tent seems like the better option as the dormitories are not isolated so you still get as much noise but with the added possibility of people coming and going at the middle of the night.
Though the reception was often useless, either there was nobody or the guy there had permission to do nothing (store luggage, rent bikes).
Rocking J's location is clearly its strong point: its access to the sea-side through a path between beach and jungle is very nice and you can see monkeys and sloths there.
We stayed in the Queen room at rocking jays really good size shower is a snakes head which is interesting we had plenty of cutlery and pots and pans etc and the bed was comfortable. We also found a sleepy sloth in the tree outside our room.
The only downside is the staff have us zero info on checking in and the vibe was quiet to the point of being a bit depressing
People with "special permission" making superloud party on the beach so nobody can sleep, whats the point closing the bar if stuff allows that, highly recommend u to stay somewhere else in case u wanna sleep at night!
I reserved a hammock in a shared dorm. The prices was incredible effordable and the best I have ever seen in Puerto Viejo. Location ist good as Well. You can reach anything easily by Walking.
