MEGALITHIC CIRCLES OF THE DIQUIS
Megalithic spheres, stones of different dimensions cut in limestone with magmatic rocks.
Inherited from pre-Columbian civilizations, these spheres - of which almost nothing is known of their origin or use - are quite numerous in Palmar. Within the forest, many stones were unearthed in the 1930s when the jungle was cleared. The jungle workers, then completely inspired by the fantasy of gold, imagined that they were full of gold! So they blew up these ancient treasures with dynamite, and found themselves empty-handed. The first studies proved that these stones had been cut between 200 BC and 1500 AD. However, the purpose of these stones remains unclear. The archaeological community, shocked by such actions, began to take an interest in this phenomenon. The geometric precision of their roundness fascinates. Some specialists evoke, because of a grouped organization or not, a wanted relation with the celestial maps. Others evoke a link with a social representation, because of the different dimensions. Carved in limestone, they are composed of a magmatic rock which comes from volcanic flows (located at approximately 100 km!). No document has been found to date and the meaning of these stones could remain a mystery forever. In total, several hundreds of stone balls, sometimes of a dozen tons, were found in the South of the country. The easiest to observe is in front of the school on the Interamericana.
