RIO TARCOLES
Rio Tarcoles is home to the American crocodile, many species of birds, herons, egrets and iguanas.
A little before the park, coming from Orotina, flows the Tárcoles River. This river, one of the largest in the country, receives the wastewater of more than 2.5 million Costa Ricans. It is therefore the most polluted river in the country (and among the most contaminated in South America). For this reason, more than 200 crocodiles have taken up residence here, not bothered by the surrounding dirt. You can easily observe them from the bridge that spans the river. The Tárcoles River is also home to many species of birds (50 species live at its mouth alone).
