Neo-Gothic Byzantine cemetery with white graves for victims of a cholera epidemic
The small town of Mucugê boasts a historical curiosity that has become a tourist attraction in its own right. It's the Santa Isabel cemetery, better known as the "Byzantine cemetery". In fact, the style is not Byzantine at all, but rather neo-Gothic. This cemetery of white graves was created in 1855 to accommodate the burial of the many victims of a cholera epidemic. The white tombs, which resemble church façades, contrast with the green of the Chapadas. Night-time lighting gives them an unreal appearance.
