FIESTA DE SANTO TOMÁS

Its festivities, concerts, fireworks, religious services and traditions make it one of the most beautiful Mayan festivals in the country.
This is the day when Chichicastenango - in the Quiché region - celebrates its patron saint, Santo Tomás. Festivities, concerts, fireworks, processions, religious services and traditions make this one of Guatemala's finest Mayan festivals. The main ancestral custom is the palo volador dance - the flying pole. Using a ladder, disguised men climb to the top of a 30-metre-high trunk, where they hold on to a rope, before jumping off and circling the pole until they reach the ground.
