RUINS OF GUMARKAAJ
Ruins with foundations showing the power of Gumarkaaj, which extended as far as Zaculeu, a Late Classic site.
Although this Late Classic site is far from imposing, it is extremely rich from a historical point of view. After hosting the capital of the Quiché kingdom, it was stormed and devastated by Spanish troops upon their arrival in Guatemala. Today, it houses many foundations, which give some idea of the power of Gumarkaaj, which reached as far as Zaculeu, a city of importance that is near the present Huehuetenango. Unfortunately, the team in charge of the ruins lacks the means, the places being little maintained.
