It is found in two forms in Xela: the permanent market and the bi-monthly market.
The permanent market is located at the south end of Parque Centroamérica, under Casa de la Cultura, at the angle of 8 a calle and 11 a avenida, and extends on the adjacent streets.
Another market is held on the 1 st and 2nd Sunday of each month on Parque Centroamérica. You don't need to get up early (before 7 p. m.) to take advantage of the first moments. The stalls are rarely installed at 8 a. m. Merchants and peasants sometimes come from a very long distance (even from Atitlán Lake) and they take some time to reach Xela. The market is installed for the day except in the case of precipitation. He is then cut off.
The vast majority of products sold are of artisan origin, wool and cotton carpets with richly embroidered clothing (huipiles, cinta), and by pottery and bags. The mood is always festive: many onlookers, endimanchés children, small gargotes with enticing smells, an orchestra that normally takes place in the kiosk located in the centre of the Parque. It is a major event in the life of Xela that should not be missed if we are at the beginning of the month in the region, even if we do not buy items that are "local" consumption.
