PARQUE NACIONAL CUEVAS DE CANDELARIA
Park formed by a complex of caves considered to be the spiritual cradle of Mayan civilization, with accommodation.
The park is formed by a complex of caves considered in the region as being the spiritual cradle of the Mayan civilization. The reason for this is the access they give to the underground watercourse which, according to the beliefs, would lead the souls in search of immortality to the borders of Xibalba. Surrounded by hills, the site has eight caves open to visitors, each with different characteristics. In total, the system formed by these immense tunnels extends for almost 80 kilometers. You can swim in pools of crystal clear water cut into the rock, explore natural structures similar to real cathedrals, observe sculptures of stalactites and stalagmites, discover archaeological remains and altars formerly used by the Mayans... A journey in itself.
In order to fully enjoy the experience, we strongly recommend that you sleep on site. To do so, there are several accommodations, among which is the camping and rooms of the community of Mucbilhá, 6 kilometers east of the park entrance. In addition to providing access to the caves of the same name, which include Del Mico and Venado Seco, it is possible to go tubing and, above all, to immerse oneself in the Q'eqchi' culture while promoting community tourism. For more comfort, continue 4 kilometers to the Candelaria Lodge, which offers excellent excursions to the Peña Blanca cave, among other things.
