SITIO ARQUEOLÓGICO DE AGUATECA
Discovered in 1957, the site was also excavated by the Peabody Museum, Harvard. It consists of a 100 m wide platform, raised by 3 m, the Plaza Mayor. The site also dates back to the turn between classic and staggered periods and contains some beautiful stelas. Mention is made of Stele No. 2, the victory of a Maya leader on one of his rivals in El Ceibal. One can detail its equipment (headgear, arms, shield) thanks to the precision of the work and the good state of the stone. The site is more to advise lovers of archaeology than to curious simple, because it is still poorly furnished.
The visit begins with a pleasant walk in the heart of the forest where you can cross monkeys. This trip is optional because you can reach the site directly from the shore by stairs, but it would be a pity to deprive you of it. There is a geological flaw of 30 m, the natural protection of the city. On the way, you will cross a second hole of 70 m deep. Early in the morning and late afternoon, the scream monkey family will moderate your visit. In the day, you will not see them, only their screams will be audible, but they will be enough to impress. The découvertes discovered are protected by a palm roof, and copies proudly dominate them. Finally, in the Punta de Chimino, you can "imagine" the last refuge citadel of the Maya Du, near the Chimino's Island Lodge.
Advice. Make sure you drink and restore yourself because there is no bar. For those travelling between September and November, don't forget your anti-mosquito, because they're very virulent at that time.
