BASÍLICA DE ESQUIPULAS
Basilica built in 1758 on a hilltop, with three naves lit by natural light from the dome.
Erected in 1758 on top of a hill overlooking Esquipulas after 18 years of construction, this massive, pristine white building is considered the largest Catholic church in Central America. As such, it was first elevated to the status of a basilica and then declared a historical and artistic monument on June 12, 1970. It has three naves and is illuminated with natural light from the dome, while its atrium is delimited by six columns. It is accessed by a monumental staircase, which is crowded every January 15.
