On the banks of the Río Chinamito, El Puente appears to have been a Mayan community independent of Copán, although the latter exerted a great influence here. Very few travellers make the effort to go there, and you'll probably be alone to explore the 210 or so millennia-old structures (including Structure 1, an 11-metre-high pyramid). Budding archaeologists can dream: more than 600 other sites have been identified, without any excavation work having been carried out!
