EL LUGAR DEL TÉ & CHOCOLATE
A very special and unique place in Copan! Not only can you enjoy tea and cocoa (100% natural), but it's also an art and craft gallery, a place to sell organic products and medicinal plants, and above all, a magnificent project for a better future. Archaeologist David Sedat, an expert on Mayan civilization, noted striking similarities between the problems of Copan today and the end of Mayan rule: uncontrolled population growth, deforestation and mountain erosion, loss of agricultural land, water scarcity and nutritional deficiencies. The "Copan 2012 Botanical Research Station" initiative was born. This experiment was set up on 20 ha of sloping farmland suffering from erosion. Using simple soil conservation techniques (not burning the land, preserving native plant species, making micro-terraces), as well as planting various types of fruit trees, medicinal trees and biofuel producers, the hills are now covered with a lush new forest with useful species and abundant wildlife, contrasting with the monocultures of corn and frijoles. This is a private, self-financed and now self-sustaining project: the family business has developed and markets a range of natural and sustainably grown products, including nono, whose fruit is known for its many virtues.
