PLAZA DE LA INDEPENDENCIA - PLAZA GRANDE
Square featuring a monument in Carrara marble, symbolizing the hymn to freedom, commemorating the first cry of independence
Planted with magnolias, hibiscus, jacarandas and coconut trees, this square is the meeting place of retired Quiteños who monopolize the benches and stroll around all day (that's why the younger ones call it the "dead pigeons" square). A Carrara marble monument, symbolizing the hymn to freedom, commemorates the first cry of independence. The Battle of Pichincha is celebrated here with a modern monument that is more wall art than sculpture.
