PARQUE ARQUEOLOGICO RUMIPAMBA
A park offering pleasant walks in the footsteps of the Quitus, the Yumbos and, of course, the Incas
Rumipamba, a Kichwa word, means "pampa" or "stone plain", and is an "in situ" museum whose remains correspond to different archaeological periods. Like many Quiteños, you can limit yourself to a visit to the park, which includes an area of archaeological excavations where you can see the traditional habitat of the Quitus, the first inhabitants of the Quito region, who lived at the time on the shores of a huge lake, in the same place where the capital is today. The park covers 32 hectares and allows pleasant walks in the footsteps of the Quitus, the Yumbos and of course the Incas. There are still the remains of the paths dug in the ground, like trenches, used by the Yumbo natives to go from the Andes to the sea while being protected from the bad weather. On the excavation site, you can also get close to ancestral tombs that are still being studied by archaeologists. But we recommend you not to miss the complete visit, with a guide, free of charge, during which you will also visit the museum built on the spot after the stop of the construction site of houses which allowed the discovery of the site, in 1990. The guide will then accompany you through the park, the archaeological sites and the yumbo paths. He will also show you a beautiful reconstruction of the traditional huts of the first aborigines of Ecuador. A visit that is really worth a detour!
