LAGUNA DEL QUILOTOA
A vast, round lagoon whose emerald-green waters shimmer in the sunlight and contrast with the surrounding landscape
The emerald-green (or midnight-blue, depending on the time of year and strength of the sun) waters of this vast round lagoon nestled in the crater of a dormant volcano shimmer in the sunlight and contrast with the surrounding landscape. Scientific expeditions, notably that of Captain Cousteau's team, have never been able to define its depth, which adds a touch of mystery. From the mirador overlooking the lagoon, a path winds down to the water's edge in the crater's hollow. While the descent is fairly easy (around 30 minutes), the return journey is considerably more strenuous, as the trail climbs and the difference in altitude is considerable (400 m), especially at an altitude of almost 4,000 m (allow 30 minutes to 1 hour). It is possible to climb back up by mule (everything is provided at the top and bottom, with prices displayed to avoid any nasty surprises). Avoid descending after 3pm, as night falls quickly and relatively early, around 5pm. You can also walk around the lagoon in 4-5 hours. Leave as soon as the sun rises, so as not to be caught off guard by the fog, which usually lifts in mid- to late afternoon, depending on the season. Quilotoa's accommodations can provide you with a guide if you don't want to go it alone. Don't forget that you're at altitude and that the skies can be capricious. Bring good walking shoes, sunglasses, sun cream, water, fleece (or warm clothing) and rain gear.
