This active volcano dominates Sangay National Park from a height of 5,023 m
From the top of its 5,023 m, the active volcano Tungurahua dominates the Sangay National Park. Tungurahua, which means "Gorge of Fire" in Quichua, is only 6 km from the town of Baños. Having slept for more than 90 years, it suddenly woke up in 1999 and more than 25,000 people were evacuated. Since then, its eruptions are very frequent and this behemoth regularly spews clouds of smoke. To see the volcano, go to the mirador, from where the view is superb. It is best to be accompanied by a professional.
