MELCOCHA - FAMILLE PEREZ
At this very small shop you are at Luis Perez, also known as Ayora, the son of the one who invented the melcocha. This local specialty, with a thick and very sweet marshmallow, is prepared based on sugar cane honey; It is very popular in the corner, especially during the city holidays, and sells like pains. The sugar cane comes from the Oriente (Puyo) and its owner then adds its own ingredients (peanuts, nuts, sesame). A bonbon of melcocha costs 5 cents, it is even cheaper than a caramel… and, it seems, very good for the evil of the mountains!
