CATEDRAL DE RIOBAMBA
The cathedral is one of the few buildings in the city to have partially withstood the devastating earthquake
The cathedral's façade comes from the former Riobamba, 17 km from the present-day city, which was destroyed by an earthquake in 1797. Behind this beautifully crafted and beautifully restored Baroque-style building, we are disappointed to discover a modern church devoid of all charm. The façade, built in white limestone, features bas-reliefs with Aboriginal and Spanish expressions, scenes from the Old and New Testaments and religious iconography. The present structure was built between 1810 and 1835.
