IGLESIA SAN FRANCISCO
Church preserving the Baroque altarpiece and pulpit, carved during the colonial era
After their arrival in the city in the 14th century, the Franciscans built a place of worship dedicated to Saint Francis (San Francisco). This religious order remained in Cuenca for more than five centuries, until 1860. Then, at the end of the 19th century, the old church was completely remodeled under the direction of the priests Isaac Peña Jaramillo and José Ignacio Peña. Inside the church, the large altarpiece and the pulpit in the Baroque style, gilded with fine gold and carved during the colonial period, are still preserved.
