CATEDRAL DE LOJA
Eclectic cathedral with parquet flooring and beautifully painted walls and ceilings
When the Spaniards founded the city, they chose this site to build their church. It is here that on 17 August each year the transfer of the Virgen de El Cisne (Virgin of El Cisne), known as La Churonita, takes place from her neighbouring shrine, where she resides all year round. This is an event that brings together many faithful people who come to the city to watch the procession. The cathedral, built in 1838, is eclectic in style, with neoclassical elements. It has parquet floors and beautifully painted walls and ceilings. It retains an old-fashioned charm.
