AMAZOONICO
Reserve covering 200 ha of primeval forest, home to abused and trafficked animals
Here, people live in harmony with nature and animals! This refuge for abused or trafficked animals, a real rehabilitation centre, was created on the initiative of two Swiss women; one of them, Angelika, manages the operation on site with her husband, Remigio, a native of the region. With the help of a handful of volunteers, mainly students of all nationalities, they take in animals that have been hunted, poached, mistreated or abandoned, and rehabilitate them in their natural environment. They work in collaboration with the vivarium of Quito, which occasionally sends them animals. The reserve extends over 200 hectares of virgin forest. At the entrance to the refuge, one is greeted by dogs, monkeys (spider, squirrel, sapajou and woolly tamarins), toucans and nosed bears, all perfectly domesticated. The most dangerous animals, such as ocelots, are kept in large cages, while others, such as coatis and monkeys (among others), roam freely in the surrounding forest. To note, a fresh waterfall where you can swim, as well as a tiny sandy beach for those who would be tempted by a swim in the Napo. A warm welcome and a visit made to measure. Near Amazoonico, an indigenous family will welcome you and will propose you to lodge on the spot if the Amazonian adventure tempts you. And if you want to volunteer, all the information is available on the website of the foundation.
