This holiday commemorates the independence of Guayaquil obtained on October 9, 1820, which was a key event in the victory of the War of Independence of Ecuador. This independence was achieved practically without bloodshed, Guayaquil declared itself independent from Spain, without much resistance from the crown, becoming the "Provincia Libre de Guayaquil" and José Joaquín de Olmedo, after whom Guayaquil's international airport is named, was appointed the first mayor of the free city.
