CEMENTERIO GENERAL
A cemetery where the dead are considered to live on after death and need a home
It extends almost as far as the eye can see. The majestic entrance opens onto a white alley planted with palm trees with painted trunks. One of the most beautiful cemeteries in South America, in operation since 1843, is also called the Ciudad Blanca (or "White City"). Its Carrara marble mausoleums and sculptures are works of art where connoisseurs will find influences from the Italian cemetery in Genoa. The tomb of Rocafuerte, the country's former president, can be seen here, as well as the mausoleum of Eloy Alfaro and a monument erected in his memory. The vegetation blends poetically with the graves. The majority of the graves are aligned pigeonholes located on high ground and closed by a grid. It is considered here that the deceased continue to live after their death and that they need a home. Out of respect, it is forbidden to take pictures and the guard will remind you of this. Allow a good hour to visit the site and do not hesitate to ask the guard to show you the most beautiful works. For security reasons, it is recommended not to isolate yourself in the cemetery and not to go there after 4pm (thefts have been reported). Today, a new point of view on this impressive cemetery is offered to us by the Aerovia, this cable car which connects the center of Guayaquil to Duran while passing over the Guayas river after having flown over the cemetery in its totality, it is probably the best means to take a photograph of it more especially as the return ticket to Duran costs only 1,5 US$.
