MISSION AND SAINT MARY'S CATHEDRAL
Cathedral offers a fine way to discover the religious fervour of the Gabonese people
The Sainte-Marie cathedral, built in 1958, was built on the site of the former Fort d'Aumale, the first post built by the French Navy in 1843. It dominates the boulevard and has beautiful stained glass windows. It was built and blessed in 1864 by Mgr Bessieux, who is buried in front of this church alongside other great figures of the archdiocese. The masses celebrated here are often full, lively and punctuated with gospel music. A beautiful way to discover the religious fervour of the Gabonese.
