THE STELE OF FREEDOM
The freedom stele near Libreville's business district commemorates the end of the slave trade in 1848
Near the business centre of Libreville, in front of the Presidential Palace, the stele of freedom commemorates the end of the slave trade in 1848. Following Schoelcher's declaration, 272 slave men, women and children were freed. It was they who founded the city of Libreville in 1849. We owe the work to the painter and sculptorMe Minko Minzé. Emblematic monument of the Gabonese Republic, it depicts a slave half-man half-woman, freeing himself from his chains. The site offers a pleasant stroll, in the heart of a green area.
