Since 2008, the consulate of Port-Gentil has become a detached chancery and provides all current services to the French community. Since 2019, it has been issuing visas again (preceded by online registration) and it is possible to register in the French register. However, it continues to ensure the safety of the French and all citizens of the European Community. During the 2009 presidential election, the consulate was completely burned. The opposition, suspecting that France was supporting the incumbent president, attacked the symbols represented by the administrations and the oil company Total. The building has since been restored.
