LEKEDI PARK
Park with a bridge allowing primates to be observed from the canopy above the Mouila river valley
Now managed by the Lékédi Biodiversité Foundation, jointly created in 2021 by Comilog and the Eramet Group, Lékédi Park covers 14,000 hectares at the entrance to the village of Bakoumba. Its primary objectives are to preserve the park's biodiversity, rehabilitate orphaned primates and develop scientific research, tourism being only a secondary activity. As the park is entirely fenced in, the animals live in this enclosed space, some of them in enclosures such as the wild dogs, chimpanzees and Jojo the gorilla. Between savannah and forest, a 4x4 visit is best planned early in the morning, for the best chance of seeing buffalo, primates, bushpigs and harnessed guibs, among other residents. You can also meet a group of habituated mandrills, very difficult to observe in the wild. This small-group outing, which is not open to children under 12, is a real thrill, but it's also a bit of a challenge, as you have to follow the mandrills as they move about. The other highlight of the tour? The vertiginous crossing of Gabon's largest suspension bridge, allowing chimpanzee observation above the canopy and the Mighola River. At 365 m long, it was built using the cables of the old cableway that used to transport mini skips filled with manganese from Moanda to Mbinda in the Republic of Congo, a distance of almost 100 km. The crossing is made in complete safety, in a superb setting.
