Built in 1575, the São Sebastião Fortress became the National Museum after independence in 1976. The museum covers the history of the country, from colonization (including the socio-cultural aspects of the society of the time) to independence. You can see the table where the declaration of independence was signed, or the original national anthem. There are several small exhibition rooms with sacred art objects, collections of everyday objects, etc. An instructive visit even if the scenography is not the most modern.
