Beautiful site in the middle of nature which proposes a visit which is done in a autonomous way in Lafayette.

Vermilionville should be a compulsory first stop on a tour of Cajun country, to understand the lives of Acadians up to the end of the 19th century, as well as those of Creoles, native Indians and African descendants. In this beautiful natural setting, on the banks of Bayou Vermilion, a Cajun village has been entirely reconstructed, some of the houses presented are original, others are replicas. It's a lively affair, and in many of the houses, an Acadian craftsman tells you, mostly in French, about life in the old days and his trade, not to mention various historical and cultural notions. The tour is self-guided, but guided tours in French can be booked in advance (fee extra). And don't miss

Le bal du dimanche: on Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m., put on your best dancing shoes and come take a step back in time at the Vermilionville Ball.

La cuisine de Maman, open Tuesday to Sunday, 11am to 2pm. Try the gourmet cuisine of Vermilionville's restaurant. The locals are particularly fond of its gumbo (and so are we!). For dessert, try the chocolate cheesecake.

Cultural days with a great program of activities (free admission): Creoles in June, Acadians in August and Native Indians in November.

The Welcome Center boutique: the perfect place to pick up some great souvenirs.

If you're in Louisiana you must visit the historic village. The museum presents very well the building styles of the area. You can learn many interesting things about Louisiana's history.

We were told there was live music on Sunday and an excellent restaurant. Well, there was no live music , The food at the restaurant was not very good, the gumbo way too salty, cauliflower and mashed potatoes were bland, bread pudding way too sweet. Turkey casserole and green peas were good. Service was slower than slow. Walk around the village was nice.
