It is one of the oldest brick Gothic churches in Louisiana and the oldest public building in New Iberia. It dates back to 1856 and was consecrated in 1858 by Bishop Leonidas Polk, who left the army to dedicate himself to the ministry. During the civil war, he joined the armed ranks and fought for the South. The church is turned into a hospital and then a stable under the occupation of Union forces.
